Autumn Bulb Planting for Spring Blooms with @farmhousewanders

Autumn is the perfect time to plant bulbs that will bloom into vibrant spring flowers, such as Tulips, Daffodils, Crocuses, and Hyacinths. These bulbs need a period of cold dormancy to flower, and planting them in Autumn (September through November) allows them to establish roots before Winter, ensuring strong blooms. Our Ambassador Sharon Holland, has provided us with her green-fingered tips to help your bulbs bloom in Spring!

Why Plant in Autumn?

Bulbs like Tulips and Daffodils thrive after being exposed to the cold of winter. Autumn planting gives them time to settle into cooler soil temperatures, without rushing before the frost hits.

Mild Autumn: A Bonus for Gardeners

2024's unusually mild Autumn has extended gardening opportunities, making it easier to get outside. I’ve been able to enjoy planting well into October, wearing my waterproof leather Salt-Water sandals, taking advantage of the extended warmth to plant outdoors.

Choosing the Right Bulbs

Look for firm, healthy bulbs without mould or soft spots for the best results.

Some popular spring bulbs include:

- Tulips: Elegant, colourful, and bloom in late spring.

- Daffodils: Bright, early bloomers.

- Crocus:  Early spring bulbs, often appearing through snow.

- Hyacinths: Fragrant clusters of vibrant flowers.

Planting Bulbs in Small Spaces

If you have limited space, bulbs also grow beautifully in pots. Use a well-draining container, and consider layering or "Lasagne Planting"—placing large bulbs like Tulips at the bottom and smaller bulbs like Crocuses at the top. Pots offer flexibility, making it easy to place them anywhere in your garden or on a balcony.

Steps for Planting

  1. Location: Choose a sunny, well-drained spot.
  2. Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil and mix in compost.
  3. Planting Depth: Plant bulbs at a depth three times their size.
  4. Spacing: Space bulbs 7-15cm apart.
  5. Water: Water thoroughly after planting.
  6. Mulch: Add mulch to protect the bulbs and retain moisture.

Winter Care and Spring Blooms

Once planted, bulbs require little care over Winter. Natural rainfall is usually enough, but if it’s dry, lightly water them. In Spring, you’ll see early bulbs like Crocuses and Snowdrops bloom, followed by Tulips and Daffodils. For extended blooming, plant a mix of early and late-season varieties.

Planting Spring bulbs in Autumn ensures a vibrant garden in the new year. Whether you have a large space or grow in pots, bulbs will bring colour and life after winter. So grab your tools (and your trusty Salt-Water Sandals) and enjoy planting while the mild weather continues.
